Columbia Heights: An Innovative and Diverse Community in Washington, D.C.

Bordering the neighborhoods of Shaw, Adams Morgan, Mount Pleasant, Park View, Pleasant Plains, and Petworth, Columbia Heights is full of history and sites, as well as new innovations and attractions.

A Brief History of Columbia Heights

During the 19th century, specifically the time following the civil war, the area that is now Columbia Heights was developed. By 1882, Senator John Sherman purchased the land and named it Columbia Heights, as Columbia College was in the center of the community. Later, in 1904, Columbia College moved to downtown Washington and changed its name to The George Washington University. During much of the 20th century, the Columbia Heights community was marketed toward high ranking members of the Federal government, military officers, and U.S. Supreme Court justices. The neighborhood was easily recognized as the Belmont mansion marked the entrance at Florida and Clifton Streets. With the addition of the streetcar down 11th, 14th, and 16th streets, new apartment buildings were built to accommodate the influx of people moving to the area. More recently, in 2011, UrbanTurf named Columbia Heights DC's most diverse neighborhood, and it is recognized for its shopping, amazing dining options, charm, and attractions.
